What is the best way to earn extra money from home?

Here’s the crazy thing: 58% of employees already have a job where they can work from home – at least some of the time. That means there’s never been a better time to start the de-stress journey again.

And there are so many options!

In this post, I’ll break down my top picks like this:

  • Almost 20 years making money online (and working full time from home since 2008)
  • 100 interviews with remote hunters
  • Access to energy for all

Done? Let us do it!

1. FlexJobs

Perhaps the easiest way for you to go hunting outside is to do some time-passing activity. This is where FlexJobs comes in – working from home. With more than 50 job types, FlexJobs offers jobs from entry-level executives to freelancers.

They charge a small monthly fee to be on their list, but you can easily redeem it and then some with the same service. When I filter for part-time jobs alone, I see over 1,000 remote jobs!

2. Remote Bookkeeping

If you have an accounting background – or are good with numbers – this might be a good thing. Why? Writing is often one of the first jobs new businesses take on and it’s easy to do at home. Kate Johnson, for example, says she makes $60 or more an hour with her virtual bookkeeping business.

3. Freelance Writing

Being a freelancer is great – you can use the skills you already have and you only need one user to get started. In the past, they have been paid to write articles about creative ways to save money at Starbucks or to summarize and recap some of my podcast articles.

I earn about $75 per article from home but I have paid freelance writers from $10 to $500+ to help me create content.

Freelance Writing

Where will you find a job? Coming up next are things to truly zero in on:

  • ProBlogger – A free job search site specifically for freelance writers.
  • BloggingPro – free job board updated daily with paid blog posts, blog posts, and free blog posts.
  • Freelance Writers – List of freelance writers and selected writing projects on various job sites, classifieds sites, and company websites.
  • Online Writing – Freelance writing for website content in various industries. Join for free. Must apply and write. Payment varies by project, but between $15 – $50.

4. Virtual Assistant Service

The demand for a professional support team that works from home, or a virtual assistant, is constantly increasing. Virtual assistants have been around since the dawn of the internet, but the industry has really exploded in the last few years.

To find a VA job, you have several options.Virtual Assistant Service

The first step is to contact an established VA organization, such as BELAY Solutions. But applicants are always deeper than supply, which is why it is so difficult to accept these companies. (Most employers boast that only 1-3% of graduates are hired – and even then they can only pay $12-16 an hour.)

Another option is to set up the shop as your virtual business. My friend Abby Ashley, who started her own VA business on the side, organized a free workshop that teaches:

  • Where you can find thousands of professionals.
  • How to make money full-time working from home.
  • Clients are seeking help from the VA. (Here’s a clue: This isn’t the primary VA experience)

5. Web Design Service

You might be surprised, but many companies have an outdated website – or none at all. Fortunately, web design is a skill that can be learned and is very rewarding.

My advice: Choose a specific niche within and become the best distributor for companies in that niche.

For example, Ryan Golgosky of creates websites primarily for laundry companies. (Seriously!) When we spoke, he shared that this idea – and a special pricing plan – took his web design business to $100,000 a month.

6. Build a Helpful Website

While building a website for a client is a huge undertaking, building a website for yourself can be even better. Now to get to the bottom of it, there is a lot to learn doing this business, but when it works, it can be very profitable.

For example:

  • Scott makes 6 figures a year on his bird blog
  • Shelley makes $50,000 a month from her travel blogs
  • Andrew has raised over $1.2 million from his award-winning website

Their websites earn money from advertising and affiliate links that scale according to your traffic growth.

  • Low starting price
  • Long term profits
  • Able to sell business on the street

  • Check the results slowly
  • There are many skills to learn

7. Start a YouTube Channel

Another way to make money from home is to post content on YouTube. Once you’ve built a following, you can monetize your videos through YouTube’s advertising platform. I recently made about $500 a month from my YouTube channel, but other YouTubers make millions from their content!

To get started, I recommend picking a niche and creating a “Q&A” topic. It could be:

  • How _______?
  • What is the best ______?
  • _______ How does it work?

This video provides a new channel for the most watched category in YouTube search.

8. Self-Publishing

Self-publishing on Amazon has been one of my longest-running projects. I started in 2012 and I still remember the excitement of getting my first direct deposit account.

(That’s $46.42!)

I have since added more books to my portfolio and am making hundreds of dollars a month. One of my books is available for free on Kindle if you want to check it out:

9. Focus Groups and Surveys

While online surveys won’t make you rich, they are an easy way to make extra money. If you have time to kill while waiting for the subway or watching TV, here are some options:

  • Swagbucks – Claim up to $35 per survey on the mega-popular app and get a $10 sign-up bonus!
  • Brand Surveys – One of the top survey sites worth millions.
  • Survey Junkie – Earn up to $40 per month and spend from $5.
  • InboxDollars – Get a $5 sign-up bonus!
  • US Consumer Opinion – Join millions of free members and earn up to $50 per review.
  • Pinecone Survey – Get $3 for any 15-20 minute survey. A check for $3 will be sent after your first check.
  • YouGov – An old forum whose information is often discussed in the media.

The best-paid option is to offer companies paid surveys and remote workgroups such as user interviews. Here, the average pay is $50-$200 per hour, and new studies are added all the time.

The downside is that payments are often made with Amazon gift cards rather than cash. Check out our full user interview to learn more – so far I’ve made $105 in an hour and a half.

10. Remote Real Estate Investing

You might not think about becoming a landlord, but there are many ways to do it. For example, my friend Dustin Heiner handles his multi-state loans. There is only property management staff and contractors “on the ground” when needed.

Remote Real Estate Investing

Or, you can look at a platform like Arrival, which allows you to invest in mortgage loans for as little as $100. The company raises money to buy rental properties, operate them and then distribute the proceeds each month.

11. Test Websites

As a web tester, you record your computer screen and voice when you use a website or application. You may need to answer questions or use a webcam as part of the process.

You provide feedback on the usability of the website or application to improve the user experience. You discuss your likes and dislikes, make suggestions for improvement, and discuss problems with the site or app.

  • User evaluation – Remuneration varies by location, but averages between $20-30/hour

12. Sell Printables and Spreadsheet Templates

One of the most interesting avenues I came across was selling prints.

These are digital files that you upload to a marketplace like Etsy. Think about it:

  • budget templates
  • chore charts
  • habit trackers
  • meal planners
  • intake forms
  • wall artand more

And the best part? Data transmission can occur when a person places an order. On the Remote Side Hustles show, Rachel Jones explained that she makes $10,000 a month from her books. If you have an eye for design and can follow trends quickly, you can close more clients.

Similarly, Emily McDermott created the Remote Side Hustles Sales Spreadsheet on Etsy. He specializes in budget models and has sold over $250,000 of them!

13. Voice Over Acting

Can you pay to speak? Voiceovers are another way to make money from home. You need a quiet room with a good microphone and a computer with audio editing software. Prices vary depending on the client and your experience, but can range from $10 to $10,000!

For example, Dom and Nicole Draper reportedly make $4,000 a month from their voiceover business.

Here are some places to start:

  • – Optimized for remote voice operations
  • – a professional voice search platform

I even connected with a teacher outside of school in a very popular video game class!

Data entry is a professional work-from-home job, but the pay isn’t great—an average of $12 an hour. The only reason I put it on this list is because some people are happy with this kind of work.
